When companies expand into new markets, it’s often about numbers. For us, it was about people, purpose, and long-term growth.
This is the story behind Jarvis Consulting Group’s decision to open a new office in Calgary. We’ll walk you through how the process unfolded, why Calgary stood out amongst other cities in Western Canada, and how this move fits into our mission to help organizations maximize the value of their data.
The Moment Calgary Became the Clear Choice
Last December, Mike Corbett (Co-Founder, Managing Partner & CEO) and Ian Cunningham (Managing Partner & Chief Client Officer) spent a week in Western Canada to explore what expansion to the region might look like. During the trip, they quickly realized that Calgary stood out. Ian would later say, “Mike and I both had a eureka moment where we looked at each other and agreed that if we were going to do this, it had to be Calgary.”
When they brought the idea to Mike’s Co-Founder, Edward Wang (Managing Partner & COO), he was immediately on board. After all, Calgary was Edward’s first home in Canada when he moved here nearly 20 years ago and was welcomed by a truly memorable experience: a typical Canadian Prairie winter.
In the months following that trip, a few key factors converged — solidifying the decision and leading to the opening of Jarvis’s Calgary office in April. This made our expansion into Western Canada official.
Strategic Investment in a Dynamic Economy
Simultaneously, though, the five months between that trip and establishing a presence in the region were marked by a dynamic and complex economic environment. Yet, this context only strengthened our leadership's resolve.
At a time when others were more cautious about growth, Mike, Edward, and Ian sought to reinforce Jarvis’s reputation as a disruptive force in the Canadian professional services landscape by proactively investing in Calgary and Western Canada.
They were also optimistic that sticking to the formula that has driven Jarvis’s success – bespoke solutions coupled with a client-centric focus – would mean they’d one day earn the right to help shape the region’s future.
More broadly, our growth strategy has been underpinned by intention. As we look at further expansion either at home or in points beyond, we will continue to be guided by that ethos
Calgary: An Innovation Powerhouse
For the un-initiated, Calgary is often perceived as an epicenter of natural resources. After all, it is home to some of the world’s biggest companies in the sector. In reality, Calgary is home to a much more vibrant business ecosystem than just “oil and gas”.
Today, Calgary is one of Canada’s biggest tech and innovation hubs – home to global players like Microsoft and high-growth startups like Neo Financial. Calgary’s strategic geography positions it as a pivotal data and innovation corridor, serving as a critical link for innovation and investment across Canada.
Maximizing the Value of Data from Coast to Coast
Just as Calgary is evolving, so is the nature of business. Across sectors, organizations are looking to unlock more value from their data — whether in energy & the environment, finance, technology, manufacturing, or life sciences. That’s where Jarvis comes in.
Whether it’s enhancing data governance or streamlining processes to empower better-informed decision-making, our expertise translates seamlessly. With our presence in Calgary, we’re now positioned to support clients in innovation hubs from coast to coast. After all, data is data, and markets are universal – whether they’re capital markets or energy markets.
