What I Learned About Leadership from Behind the Scenes of Jarvis’ Podcast, The Iteration Lab

Written by Peter Augustinavicius

Season 1 of The Iteration Lab brought together leaders from across industries - founders, executives, builders, and operators - each with their own path and perspective. And while the podcast explored topics like technology, innovation, and scaling organizations, one thing became clear as the conversations unfolded: the most valuable lessons weren’t technical or business-oriented. They were human.

Listening to these leaders talk openly about their experiences revealed patterns in how they think, how they grow, and how they approach difficult moments. Different industries, different backgrounds, different journeys, yet many of the same leadership instincts appeared again and again.

Here are a few of the themes that stood out the most for me.

  1. They Value Mentorship

One of the most consistent patterns across our guests was how intentionally they sought guidance from others. This wasn’t because they lacked confidence, but because they understood that mentorship is a force multiplier for experience.

Several guests spoke about the importance of asking people who had been through similar situations before: what worked, what didn’t, and what they wished they had done differently.

Mentorship wasn’t portrayed as formal or even “a really old guy talking to you about his life, work, or career”. Rather, it was framed as curiosity. The willingness to reach out, ask thoughtful questions, and learn from people who had already been through it.

Leadership, in this sense, wasn’t about having all the answers. It was knowing who to ask, and what to ask.

This was a great reminder that the best leaders aren’t the most self-sufficient. They are the most curious ones.

  1. They Embrace Rejection

Another pattern that surfaced repeatedly was the way successful leaders relate to rejection and failure.

Many of our guests openly shared stories of being told no (sometimes repeatedly). The difference wasn’t that they avoided rejection; it was that they treated it as a new data point rather than failure.

Rejection refined their approach. It forced them to revisit assumptions, buttress their ideas, and sometimes pursue a different (and often better) direction altogether. In many cases, what initially looked like a setback turned into an opportunity.

Our guests didn’t try to eliminate rejection from their journey. They learned how to work through it.

  1. They Obsess Over Outcomes

One insight that appeared across several conversations was the difference between focusing on processes and focusing on outcomes.

Don’t get me wrong: Process matters. And so does structure. But time-and-again, our guests emphasized the importance of execution and results being a precursor to building out process.

Great teams don’t simply follow processes. They refine them when those processes stop serving their desired outcomes. This mindset creates a culture where people are encouraged to ask not just “Are we following the steps?” but also “Are we actually solving the problem?”

It’s a subtle shift, but a powerful one.

  1. They Prioritize Culture

Perhaps the most consistent theme in this first season was the emphasis on culture. Not culture as a list of values on a slide deck, of course. But culture a central feature of their teams and their organizations.

The leaders we spoke with were deliberate about the kinds of teams they built. Curiosity, resilience, accountability, and a shared sense of purpose were among the most important attributes. They understood that strategy and execution are only as strong as the people behind them.

Culture, in their view, wasn’t a soft concept. It was an operational advantage.

  1. They Embrace Discomfort

Growth, as it turns out, rarely happens in comfortable environments.

Many of our guests described moments where they stepped into roles they didn’t feel fully prepared for, made decisions with incomplete information, or navigated unfamiliar territory. Rather than waiting for perfect certainty, they execute, even with imperfect information, and adapt along the way.

The common thread across these stories wasn’t that they had confidence from the start. It was the willingness to evolve.

The Bigger Lesson

Working on this podcast gave me the chance to spend time with leaders whose perspectives I genuinely admire. Even being in the background for these relatively short conversations, hearing how they think through challenges and decisions was incredibly valuable.

I’ve always enjoyed having the opportunity to create space for the kinds of candid conversations that happen at the bar or over dinner, not in conferences or boardrooms. It has been a real privilege to be a part of sharing these conversations as well as the stories and lessons that came out of them.

Many of these lessons sound deceptively simple in theory. Yes, none of these ideas are new on their own, but hearing how these leaders apply them in practice made it clear how powerful they become when they’re truly lived, not just talked about.

Working on this project was also a microcosm of some of the very lessons our guests shared. When we started on this journey, I had never worked on a podcast, nor did I have the faintest idea of how or where to start. Despite that, I was guided by some of the very things our guests talked about: Embracing discomfort and focusing on execution and outcomes. So, as far as the utility of these lessons goes, the proof really was in the pudding.

What made this experience even better was seeing how the conversations resonated with our audience. The feedback and engagement around each of the episodes showed that these perspectives were reaching people in a meaningful way.

Season 1 was a great start, and I’m excited to help share more of these conversations in Season 2!
